CHAPTER 15

TRAIL

Nolan knelt beside the wagon tracks while Bastaine’s dragon soared above, its wingspan momentarily blotting out the sun. His cadre brother’s throaty voice echoed in his mind.

“They broke into two groups. One is heading north, and the other west.” Bastaine dropped from the sky, transforming to touch ground as a man.

Nolan stared into his cadre brother’s hazel eyes. “We’ll cover more ground if we separate.”

Bastaine nodded. “Which one do you want, old man?”

Nolan lifted an eyebrow. “Old man?”

Bastaine rolled his shoulder. “I just call ’em as I see ’em.”

“Well, don’t forget this old man can kick your ass.”

A grin spread across Bastaine’s face. “They say dementia is one of the first signs of age.”

Nolan rose and turned away from his irritating younger brother.

Undaunted, Bastaine caught up and fell in step beside him.

The mid-morning suns beat at Nolan’s back, an indicator the day would be unusually warm for this time of year. His jaw tightened in determination. He had promised Lizbet he would find Amari or bring back evidence of her death. Amari’s necklace lying in the grass beside a pyre didn’t mean she’d died there, his stubborn mate had insisted. Lizbet had looked at him with such hope, he didn’t have the heart to quash her youthful optimism. So he’d made a promise he didn’t know if he could keep.

“Do you really think she’s alive?” Bastaine asked.

Nolan glanced at his brother. A healthy growth of stubble covered Bastaine’s jaw and the disheveled blond hair bespoke of a crack in the younger male’s normally impeccable appearance. Losing Amari would be a devastating blow for the entire nest. While Bastaine joked to alleviate his pain, the shadows under his eyes indicated heartache and sleepless nights. After all, they had failed to protect their most precious—the nestlings.

His heart twisted. If not for Amari, Lizbet would be gone too. If a filthy tracker had so much as touched a single hair on his beautiful mate’s head, he would have ripped the man’s heart out of his chest without a second thought. Even before Lizbet had pleaded with him to find her sister, he had already made Amari his quest. He wouldn’t rest until they had their eldest back in the nest, or had absolute proof she was gone.

“Greyson and Lizbet seem to think she’s alive.”

“We’ll keep looking until we know for sure, right?”

Nolan faced his cadre brother. Bastaine’s eyes sought reassurance. Although still young in dragon years, Bastaine had earned the privilege of becoming part of Greyson’s cadre. Nolan clasped his brother’s shoulder. “We’ll find her, whether she walks this plane or the next. We’ll discover what happened, and if she lives, bring her back.”

“Do you think if we had established a link with her when she was young, we would have found her already through our connection?”

Nolan glanced at the meadow of swaying grass, pondering Bastaine’s question. A link only created a means to communicate, and because they hadn’t taught Amari how to speak mentally, he didn’t think a link alone would be enough.
